Understanding age-related hearing loss
Age-related hearing loss, or presbycusis, is a common condition that develops gradually as we age. It is usually a combination of several factors, including

- Prolonged exposure to loud sounds damages the sensory hair cells of the inner ear.
- These hair cells, which are essential for hearing, do not regenerate once damaged.

- Chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, which are more common in older adults, can contribute to hearing loss.
- Some medications, such as chemotherapy drugs, can also damage the sensory cells in the ears.

- Decreased function of the tympanic membrane (eardrum) or of the three ossicles of the middle ear may affect the transmission of sound to the inner ear.
Can age-related hearing loss be prevented?
Although scientists have not yet discovered a way to completely prevent age-related hearing loss, you can take steps to prevent noise-induced hearing loss:
- Protect your ears from loud and prolonged noise with earplugs or earmuffs.
- Reduce exposure to sources of harmful noise, such as firearms, lawn mowers, snowmobiles and loud music.
- Be aware of the duration and intensity of exposure to loud sounds.
